Directions to the trailhead

Leaving Squamish and travelling north, turn right on Highway 99 about 1/2 km past the Mamquam River Bridge. The road crosses Mashiter Cr. and becomes a dirt road. It climbs the gentle ridge above Ring Cr. for 16 km. The road ends at the Diamond Head Parking Lot, just inside the border of Garibaldi Provincial Park. For Vancouverites, this is the nearest access to the park, and is a popular summer and winter.

Detailed description of the trail

The trail is the old jeep road that once led to Elfin Lakes. It rises gradually for about 4.5 km from the parking lot to Red Heather Meadows.

Since this is the southern gateway to all of Garibaldi Park, it is used by hikers and climbers in the summer and by skiers, snowshoers and climbers in the winter.

This account talks about the route to the Red Heather Cabin; but for most people the Cabin is a place for a short break on the way to many other adventures and destinations.
